Advocacy Services:
- Individual Advocacy: information and referral, consultation, legal representation for families seeking less restrictive educational placements for their child.
- Administrative Advocacy: actions to promote the adoption of policies, procedures, and practices at the federal, state, and local level to promote systemic changes to ensure that students with disabilities can access general education in their neighborhood school.
- Training and support: information and consultation to families and educational teams seeking to develop supplementary aids, services and supports so that students with disabilities can be members of and achieve in the general education classroom.
Professional Development Services:
- Training and Support for Schools Including Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders
As a part of the national Professional Development in Autism Center (PDA). MCIE provides training and support for school districts, families and communities to ensure that students with ASD have access to high quality, evidence-based educational services in his or her local school district.
- Systemic planning with school districts:
in collaboration with the Maryland State Department of Education, assist school districts to plan to improve the placement practices and approach to delivering special education services, increasing the numbers of students with disabilities who successfully learn with their neighborhood friends in general education classes.
- Inclusive School development:
implementation of a 3-year building-based approach with school action planning teams to restructure special education service delivery to bring ALL students back to their neighborhood school and increase inclusive practices within the school.
- Inservice training:
professional development courses and workshops on instruction to support a variety of learners in the classroom, positive behavior supports, strategies to promote meaningful participation in the classroom for challenging students, individual student planning, and other related topics.
- Individual student planning:
facilitation of transition planning meetings, collaborative planning with teams, and information strategies specific to a student who is included and for whom school staff are struggling to design successful supports.
Information Services:
- Product development:
booklets, manuals, and pamphlets describing strategies for including students with disabilities (see publications)
- Conferences/Institutes:
Annually, MCIE conducts statewide training opportunities open to parents, professionals, advocates, and others seeking information on state-of-the-art practices in instructing and supporting children and youth with disabilities in general education settings.
- Presentations:
for parents, professionals, and the general community: information on various topics to university classes, parent organizations, advocacy groups, professional organizations, across the State and nationally.
