June 2018 Update

As we wind down the school year, MCIE staff are reflecting on our work. A quick rundown of our projects:

    • Calvert County Public Schools are working diligently to increase the participation of students with disabilities in general education settings, supporting school structures for "natural proportions," and coaching practices that lead to increased student proficiency. We so value our partnership! 
    • As we wind down our work in Allegany County, we are pleased with some of the feedback we've received and the expansion of inclusive practices that continues.
    • Our work to support secondary transition programs in Maryland is growing: we developed the Indicators of Effective Transition Practices (ETP) for the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE), Division of Special Education/Early Intervention Services. With our MSDE colleagues, we faciltiated this self-assessment so that local school systems could identify their strengths in implementing services that reflect national standards and also develop action plans for growth. This year and next we will be working with local colleges that partner with MD local districts to provide "inclusive higher education" programs for students who are age 18 - 21 and continue to be served by local school systems. 
    • We conducted an assessment of special education services in an Illinois district, and had to opportunity to use some of our systems planning tools to gather information from staff, building leaders, and families. Coupled with student data, we were able to develop a report that described their current status and possibilities for change.
    • We are honored to be a part of a National Collaborative on Inclusive Principal Leadership coordinated by the Council of Chief State School Officers: check out their Professional Standards and new website for leaders of inclusive schools!
    • We continue to provide supports to Commodore John Rogers K-8 in Baltimore City and look forward to continueing our partnership. What a dedicated team!
    • Our international relationships continue to grow: we trained educators from 4 schools in the city of Astana, Kazakhstan, and hosted Dr. Xu Suqiong from the Chongqing Normal University. As part of an exchange program with the National Committee on US-China relations, our staff will be visiting China this summer and learning about educational practices there.
    • We continue a strong partnership with MSDE in a number of areas that support the Strategic Plan of the Division of Special Education/Early Intervention Services. We are grateful to have this opportunity to work alongside our state partners to promote positive outcomes for children and youth with disabilities and their families.
